Ok, short notice but Ross Lemereaux is looking for volunteers to do WW2 at the Tampa Bay History Center this Saturday Sept 29 10am to 5pm. This is the weekend before we leave for Toccoa so I'll understand if anyone passes to do Toccoa instead. I live in Tampa so I have no excuse other than school, so I'm in if I get my research paper stuff done soon enouth. I'll be doing Army Air Corps like I usually do, probably just flight suit, Mae West, and crusher cap with my Airborne stuff on the table so kids can play dress-up.
Anybody else want in? Could use someone in Airborne uniform for pics with the public.

Sorry, I'm out for this one. You're flying solo this time, Troy. I've got to work Saturday. I already spoke with Ross and told him I probably wouldn't be able to make it.

I think we can arrive by noon and stick around until 1400 or 1500-ish. Sound good? This is all indoor, correct? That impacts what I wear and bring. I can pack light, with full kit on me, or I can bring along a few display pieces. Let me know what you need! Thanks for the opportunity and have a great day! Rabbi Rob.

What is Fort CLinch event about ..anybody...time line or what? I have to admit that reading "Clinch" doesn't make me think of a good, happy place.

Two hours is better than no hours.
It's all indoors, so that makes things a little easier. No reason to bring a lot of stuff, just what you can bolt onto your person - helmet, webgear, musette, rifle, m3 combat knife, map case, grenades, cricket, cargo pocket stuffed with toy soldiers, etc.
I have spare helmet and webgear in a footlocker that I'll bring, along with stove, messkit, canned food, and such. Most people just look at the guns, grenades and knives and enjoy playing dress-up for pics (not that there's anything wrong with that, of course, because, you know, I do the same thing all day long).
I'm coming as Air Corps, George is coming as USMC, and you can cover the Airborne piece.

Hi, team. I'll be doing Army Air Corps like I usually do, probably just flight suit, Mae West, and crusher cap with my Airborne stuff on the table so kids can play dress-up. ... This was a great event, though I was unable to stay very long. Jeffrey was USMC, Troy was Air Corps, and George and I were Airborne. There was quite a crowd, and they were very enthusiastic. One kid held my Thompson so long that I almost charged him rent. The kids really loved wearing Troy's web gear and helmet, and there were a lot of pictures taken. The kids and adults constantly remarked about the weight of the gear. That always seems to surprise folks. Troy's weapon display fascinated the adults. Quite a few of the adults were able to name all four rifles, and I learned quite a lot listening to Troy and to the savvy tourists. I'm glad I brought my dummy bullets and clips. The kids enjoy anything tactile, so they enjoyed seeing the difference between the rounds, and the weight of a full magazine. We met a former Army intelligence veteran (alas I forget her name) who is interested in joining us. When she told me she worked intelligence, I thanked her for getting my unit lost. She would love to portray a WAC or something similar. We talked at length about the gear and investment, none of which bothered her. She took down Troy's information, I believe. We met a Mr. Napolitano, recently retired and living in the Tampa area, who may wish to join our merry band. He is quite knowledgeable about WWII and has toured Normandy. His gal pal's father was Airborne, I believe. Hopefully he visited the second floor and took our information. Troy, Mike, and I were in the cafe for lunch. Unfortunately there was only one server, Josh, working the floor and it took a very long time for Mike and Troy to get their lunch. The good news is that I went to lunch in full gear (I wasn't eating, so it wasn't in my way) and that solicited more discourse and pictures. This is how we met Mr. Napolitano. Once again a quasi-patrol really jazzed some folks, and Troy did a nice job of directing those folks to our second floor OP. I wouldn't recommend a patrol through the facility, though, due to the crowds. Troy, George, and Jeffrey setup a really nice display. The parachute covering the table was an excellent touch, and gave us a place to hide farb and gear under the table. Several folks who didn't chat us up stopped to watch BoB playing, which was great to see. It's a nice facility, very comfortable and easy for living history. The staff are friendly and very appreciative. As I made my way out, every staffer I passed thank me for being there. If I were to change anything, I think I'd bring more of my D-Day kit. With the AC running, it's not horrible to wear additional gear. George's letdown rope was a great idea, and I might wear the gas mask bag, with or without the mask, next time. I'm still trying to sort out how best to secure my Hawkins mine to my leg. Suggestions welcome! I'll definitely attend again. Thanks to Jeffrey, Mike, George, and Troy for having me along and for raising my clue level yet again! Best regards, Rabbi Rob.

Excellent write-up!
Her name is Monica and I gave her one of our cards, along with my email address. I told her we'd love to have someone to tell the female side of things, and particularly the Hispanic contribution to the war.
Mr. Napolitano came by and I gave him a card as well.
If I get a chance I'm going to bulk out my cartridge belt a bit more to add some more weight. Right now it's only half-full of rounds and doesn't even have the gas mask bag, let-down rope, or canned food in the musette.

If you want that authentic Upottery, pre-d day look...in addition to rope go with the mae-west, gas mask bag, let down rope, gloves, and of course hawkins mine..which i have yet to find a good way to fit to my leg as well. Then when u wanna spend more bucks the t-5, reserve, and griswald bag will complete the ensemble. Remember your a paratrooper you have to accessorize. I figure on a hot day you'd last maybe 30 minutes before passing out.

I'd be willing to wear the full kit for brief periods for living history events. If we also brought along a scale (I have a spare) we could demonstrate for folks how much the full ensemble weighed. I'll need help putting it all on, and probably need help standing up if I sit at any point. I think this would be pretty cool! Too bad I won't arrive in time for the school visits in Toccoa. Let's keep it in mind for the next cool or indoor living history display, and I'll do it! Thanks! Rabbi Rob.

Don't forget the pack list for the musette as well, plus 200 rounds of ammo for your rifle.

And that, troopers, is why they jumped....to get out of that blooming chute harness! I was the parachute dummy for the Toccoa school day one year, and the harness was not really adjusted to fit me...miserable! But I looked cool, and that was the point!
