No, the park is still closed for the updating of the helicopters, as far as I know. I think most of the units that went to the Tampa event are going to Orlando this year. I think.

There's a small library event in Orlando next Saturday. George has the details if you want to call him about it.

July 4 we're invited to set up displays (or just wander around the galleries in kit) at the Tampa Bay History Center in downtown Tampa, behind the St. Pete Times Forum (aka the Ice Palace). This is indoors and they'll provide tables and space if we give advance warning.
No weapons restrictions, WW2 and 'Nam encouraged.
Free parking, and they say they've had good public attendance the last two years they've done it.

We're looking at possibly trying something like it again in the future; possibly an encampment on the waterfront park next door when the weather gets better - I'm thinking end of January possibly as a Bastogne LH. If I hear anything further, I'll pass it along.

A P-51D may be stopping at Peter O. Knight airport as part of a tour some time during the next few months, and we may be doing an Air Corps display as part of the visit, to support the Tampa Bay History Center. I found out Sunday. More news as I hear about it.

Would anyone be interested in doing AAF or Airborne at an event in South Georgia? Or maybe just a weekend working on a B-17? Possibly staying in WW2 barracks at the airport. WPG has coveralls on closeout for $45.

Ted, I was asked which plane I wanted to work on, the XP or the B-17 (the owner wants me on the B-17). So if there is anyone interested, I can switch my schedule and work a weekend when everyone can make it. The owner also has a second bombbay section and other parts as well as whats left of Liberty Belle. We could probably build another fuselage. We are working on getting the classroom or a barracks from the old Air Base so you would have a place to stay. That or either pitch a tent or sleep in the hangar.

Yeah, maybe we could get a handful of us to come up for a weekend. That would be cool.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Municipal_Airport_(Georgia)Here are some pictures, most of the buildings are still there. The hangar on the left burnt down, we work in the middle hangar. The classroom building is to the right, before the infirmary and Link trainer building. We are trying to get that and at least one of the barracks buildings.

It's actually pretty neat that there are that many original buildings still left standing. I wish the city of Zephyrhills had saved more of the barracks buildings from WWII.

It's about a 5-hour drive from Tampa, so definitely an overnighter. After 5 hours in the car, you'll be lucky to get another 5 hours of honest work out of us before we collapse.

Just a reminder that the Nature Coast Veteran's Reunion is this weekend - October 7-9. I know those of us that went to Toccoa are still feeling a little strung out, but those boots were made for walkin' and that's what they're gonna do... October 7-8-9 = Nature Coast All Vet's Reunion - WW2, Vietnam, DS1, OIF (if you have them) www.naturecoastveteransreunion.org Weather calls for partly cloudy, temps in mid-80's for the high; mid-60's for the low. Perfect camping weather, but bring bug repellent because the site is primitive. Might be a good idea to bring your own water, too. I'm thinking good photo op here, too. Also, on the way back from Toccoa, there was some talk about trying to make some events in South Carolina. If you guys hear of anything that might be interesting, pass the word! Troy
